About Us

Burfoot Flowers is a back-yard flower farm in Thurston County owned and operated by Mara & Noll. Our farm is located near it’s namesake Burfoot Park, and sits on the indigenous lands of the Salish Peoples. Mara can be found in the first-year seedling row, stuffing her pockets with seeds and updating her spreadsheets. Noll is the mastermind behind our irrigation, support, and is head of tuber washing!

Taking a barefoot (or burfoot) meander through the flower garden is a family tradition we have been carrying on since 2018. Our goal is to cultivate and share the simple joy and peace that tradition brings. We produce a tightly curated collection of dahlia tubers for sale, operate a small dahlia breeding program, and offer seasonal fresh flowers locally as well.

 Thank you for being here!

FAQ

About Burfoot Seedlings

We have been growing dahlias from seed since 2021, and releasing them through our tuber sales since 2024. Our dahlia seedlings are named with the prefix 'Burfoot', abbreviated to 'BF'. Most of our seedlings are open pollinated. We evaluate and grow out our seedlings for 3-5 years before they are introduced.

Currently we don't send our seedlings to ADS trial gardens, or trial them in all different growing conditions before they are released. We grow in the Pacific Northwest, and are excited about sharing dahlias that we love and love using for our own design and cut flowers. They are dynamic, unique, and do sometimes bend the rules!

If you want to grow new releases while having more certainty about how a new dahlia will perform or look in your location, I would recommend waiting a season or two, seeking out hybridizers that do participate in the ADS trial gardens, or better yet-- hybridizers that are local to you!

If we have information about how a seedling has done in different climates, we will share it, but we don't always have this information.

Our Dahlia Virus Protocols

We take dahlia virus very seriously and go to great lengths to keep our stock as healthy as possible. We are committed to doing our best, and we will continue to update our practices as the science evolves, and we keep learning. Our current dahlia virus protocols are summarized below.

  • We isolate all dahlias that are new to our farm, and we isolate our seedlings from all other dahlias.
  • We examine plants for virus symptoms multiple times per season, and cull anything symptomatic, or suspicious.
  • We regularly release beneficial insects to keep pest populations in check. We occasionally spot-treat with Safer Soap if we find a colony of aphids, but we do not spray insecticides broadly in our garden or field as a preventative.
  • We sanitize our tools between every plant, every time, all season. This includes during flower harvest, while taking down plants in the fall, and between each clump during tuber division.
  • We currently use 1% and 2% Virkon S to sanitize our tools. Virkon is a cleaning solution that specifically targets viruses, and has been shown to prevent transmission of horticultural viruses in studies that closely resemble our real-life sanitization practices, and transmission vectors.

Royalties, Trademarks, Patents and Restrictions

We do not have mandatory royalties, trademarks, patents or any restrictions on who can sell Burfoot dahlias, and we have no plans to do so. It is our sincere hope that as a community of dahlia sellers, we can ensure all our hybridizers are fully supported, while also maintaining the generous, open-hearted and entrepreneurial spirit of the dahlia community we love.

For us, that has meant organizing with our peers to build 100% voluntary, flexible royalty systems that are rooted in connection, appreciation, and trust. This means that we receive and pay voluntary royalties-- and we hope that our peers will join us! If you are a tuber seller or dahlia hybridizer, and are curious about how voluntary royalties work, please reach out! We would be happy to chat with you.

International Shipping

Firstly, we are so honored you want to grow our dahlias! It is such a compliment-- thank you for your interest. Unfortunately we are not able to offer international shipping at this time. We hope to tackle this in the future, but right now our plates are full!
