Tuber Limits per Household
Certain special varieties have limits on the number of tubers that can be purchased by a household. As a very small farm, we use limits to help share these special dahlias with as many people as possible. Please respect the limits. If your household purchases over the limit, your entire order, or orders will be canceled. If you have any questions or concerns about limits, please reach out ahead of the sale: bloom@burfootflowers.com
Tuber Name Labeling Code
Tubers are labeled with their full names, or with “initials” of the full variety name. These initials are printed on your packing slip for your reference. If you’ve compared your tubers with your order and need help confirming who is who, email us at: bloom@burfootflowers.com
Substitutions
If something goes wrong with our tuber storage and we are unable to ship some, or all of your order, we will reach out and refund you. If you request a substitution instead, we will offer you one whenever possible.
Dahlia Virus
Unfortunately virus is very common in dahlia gardens, with the American Dahlia Society reporting that 87% of dahlias that appear completely normal and healthy are actually infected with at least one virus. This means that even for experts, it is impossible to consistently diagnose virus symptoms without testing, and a plant that looked completely healthy one year, may start showing symptoms the next.
We are not able to test every plant that we grow, which means we cannot guarantee the tubers we sell are virus free. That being said, we take virus very seriously and go to great lengths to keep our stock as healthy as possible. We examine our plants closely, and cull anything suspicious. We have robust virus-specific sanitization practices between every plant, every time. This includes in cutting flowers, cutting down plants in the fall, and during tuber division.
Our dahlia virus motto is “every year a little better”, and we are seeing the results of our efforts! Our dahlia testing results showed very positive improvement between the 2022 and 2023 seasons, after implementing our virus protocols. We are committed to doing our best, and continuing to learn about this evolving science. We will continue to update our practices, not let an impossible “perfect” be the enemy of good, and strive towards healthy dahlias for all!
